Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” is officially the most successful single of the year so far. The summer hit has now been on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks, passing the eight weeks Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” spent at No. 1.
Billboard notes that the chart hasn’t seen two successful songs dominate since 2009. The two songs have spent a combined 17 weeks at No. 1. That’s the most for two songs in a row since The Black Eyed Peas had back-to-back success with “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling” in 2009. The two Black Eyed Peas Songs spent a total of 26 weeks at No. 1.
“Call Me Maybe” has now been downloaded over 5 million times, while “Somebody That I Used To Now” is now over 6 million downloads. “Somebody That I Used To Know” is currently at No. 6 on the Hot 100.
Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” came in at No. 2, while Flo Rida’s “Whistle” hit No. 3. The rest of the Top 5 includes Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake” and Maroon 5’s “Payphone.”
Rihanna’s “Where Have You Been” sits at No. 7 and David Guetta’s “Titanium” came in at No. 8. Phillip Phillips’ “Home” and Pink’s “Blow Me (One More Kiss)” are in the No. 9 and No. 10 slots, respectively.
In other Jepsen news, the 26-year-old Justin Bieber protege recently announcedthat her second album, Kiss, is coming out on Sept. 18.
“The record is pop,” she said in a statement. “It’s inspired by Robyn, the Cars, Madonna, and believe it or not, James Taylor.”
