Miley Cyrus VMA Performance broke a record on Twitter!

Miley Cyrus attends the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards in Brooklyn

Miley Cyrus was the big winner at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards — even though she didn’t take home a Moonman prize. The 20-year-old singer broke a record on Twitter after her raunchy performance of “We Can’t Stop” and “Blurred Lines” duet with Robin Thicke on stage at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Sunday, Aug. 25.

“Smilers! My VMA performance had 306,000 tweets per minute,” Cyrus proudly tweeted to her fans on Aug. 26. “That’s more than the blackout or Superbowl! #fact.” Cyrus sent Twitter into a frenzy during her over-the-top performance that featured her twerking in underwear while using a foam finger as a sexual prop with Thicke, 36.

Miley Cyrus caused controversy with fans at the MTV VMAs

During the show, the former Disney star sounded disappointed that she wasn’t picking up any awards. “Leaving the VMAs. No it’s not over,” she tweeted. “I’m no psychic but congrats @onedirection #songofthesummer.”

Though her performance certainly got attention, those closest to Cyrus were worried about the hyper-sexualized show. “Miley’s team is freaking about that performance,” an insider told Us Weekly. “They saw the rehearsals, but those were really played down compared to the live performance.”

But a second source insisted, “It’s the VMAs, of course she’s going to do a standout performance! No one (from her team) was shocked by this.”
