Box Office: ‘The Hobbit’ Holds No. 1, Woman in Black 2′ Beats Estimates and Unbroken 3rd!

Audiences maintained their affair with The Hobbit  in the first weekend of 2015 even as they began a dalliance with The Woman In Black 2,which landed in fourth for the weekend. Disney’s Into The Woods and Universal’s Unbroken, meanwhile, traded places in the Top 3 from last weekend. Woods grossed an estimated $19.1M Friday to Sunday vs. Unbroken‘s $18.358M estimated weekend take.

Overall, the box office has grossed an estimated $208.233M New Year’s Day throughSunday, a 5.5% increase from 2014’s first four-day total of $197.444M, according to Rentrak Theatrical. The Top 10 features totaled $127.256M Friday to Sunday, down 28.7% from last weekend’s $178.521M, but up 7% from last year’s Top 10 of $118.936M, which included Frozen and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The weekend’s total box office cume came in at $153M, an 8.4% increase from the same period last year, according to Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian.

Warner Bros’ The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies is estimated to have grossed $21.9M Friday to Sunday in 3,875 theaters, a 46% decline from the previous weekend’s 3-day $41.4M gross. That is lower than the third frame of Smaug, which came in at just over $29M and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘s $31.9M. Still,Five Armies first January frame outperformed Smaug‘s $15.675M gross during the same period last year as well as An Unexpected Journey‘s $17.5M two years prior. Both Smaug and An Unexpected Journey opened earlier in December than Five Armies, which moved its release forward to capitalize on when the Christmas holiday fell on the calendar.

The Five Armies’ has now been atop the box office for three weeks, aligning the title with the previous five Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit titles which all landed number one in the box office for three weeks or more.

Relativity’s The Woman In Black 2: Angel Of Death grossed an estimated $15.14MFSS, beating the distributor’s initial estimates of $9-$11M, and ended up in fourth overall. Not bad for a $1M acquisition. It came on strong Friday with a $7.75M gross (including $1.5M from Thursday evening sneak screenings) and rounded outSaturday with a $4.93M daily gross (-36%).

“This first weekend in January has proven to be a solid core weekend for [thrillers],” said Kyle Davies, Relativity’s President Worldwide Distribution. “In terms of geography, it played broadly in large cities and small towns with strong Hispanic and African American representation. It skewed younger and female.”

Exit polls showed The Woman In Black 2‘s crowd was 53% female and 65% 25 and under. Caucasians made up 38% of the weekend’s crowd, with 25% being African American and 24% Hispanic.

Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent becomes the highest grossing film sold on one star’s name!

It was only a few months ago that analysts had, foolishly it would seem, branded Disney’s live-action adventure ‘Maleficent’ as a flop, and that was even before it had been released in cinemas.

However, after a strong opening and consistent debut week and beyond, the stattos were left scratching their heads at the impressive $697 million it has made to date, from a $180 million budget. But what’s more impressive is that ‘Maleficent’ was, until Michael Bay’s ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’, the highest grossing non-superhero film of 2014, which was a heck of an achievement, considering it was predicted to flop upon its end of May release. Impressively, ‘Maleficent’ can now boast as being the highest-grossing film sold on a single movie star’s name. And what does that mean?

Well, it basically means films that were marketed with a single name on the poster and its advertising material. Angelina Jolie’s name solely features on the posters, which qualifies the film. It has proven to be a big hit across the globe and appears to have captured the imaginations of audiences in far greater numbers than anyone ever thought it would.

Top 5 Movies sold on a single star’s name:

1. Angelina Jolie – Maleficent – 697.2
2. Tom Cruise – Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol – 694.7
3. Tom Hanks – Forrest Gump – 677.4
4. Bruce Willis – The Sixth Sense – 672.8
5. Will Smith – Hancock – 624.4

Angelina Jolie undergoes double mastectomy

Actress Angelina Jolie announced in a New York Times op-ed article on Tuesday that she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

“My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman,” Jolie wrote. “Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.”

Jolie’s mother, actress and producer Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56.

In the Times op-ed, titled “My Medical Choice,” Jolie said she finished three months of medical procedures at thePink Lotus Breast Center in California on April 27 that included the mastectomies and reconstruction.

“I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made,” Jolie wrote. “My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent.

“I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer,” she said.

Jolie may be best known for title role in the “Laura Croft” series of films, but also won an Academy Award as best supporting actress in “Girl, Interrupted.” She also received a Golden Globe Award and SAG Award for the same role.

Jolie serves as a special enjoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and has visited refugee camps around the world.

The actress has been in a relationship with actor Brad Pitt since the mid 2000s and they are engaged. The couple has three biological and three adopted children.

Angelina Jolie Pregnant With 7th Child?!

Whip out the “CONGRATULATIONS!” banner and throw in a few blue balloons because — if you believe the latest rumors — Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are expecting! Again!

Hollywood’s golden couple have six children so far: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne, to whom Jolie gave birth in 2008. This will make the new bouncing baby No. 7, reports Star magazine in their Feb. 4, 2013, issue that hit newsstands this week.

A source told Star that “Angelina has been staying out of the public eye because she doesn’t want to let anyone know that she’s expecting,” which for some explains her absence from this month’s Golden Globes. “She had morning sickness and didn’t want to draw attention to herself in public,” said the source.

According to Star, Angie and Brad are telling their friends they are having a boy and “Shiloh has even determined that the baby’s name must be John.”

Whether or not the Jolie-Pitt clan is expecting will be determined in six months, as Angelina is said to be three months along in her pregnancy. Though we’d love it to be true, we try not to keep our hopes up — after all, the rumor-mill churns out pregnancy rumors quite often …

In January 2012, OK! magazine claimed Jolie is pregnant and that Pitt is “ecstatic over the news.”

In February, mere weeks later, OK! magazine was at it again, claiming the two A-listers have set a wedding date for the summer (meanwhile summer has come and gone and … no wedding took place that we know of) and that Angie is preggers with twins. Again. This time, twin boys.

In March, the talk around town was that Jolie struck her famous pose at the Oscars (remember the slit dress and the exposed right leg?) to draw attention away from her baby bump.

By May, Life & Style publicized that not only is Angie pregnant, but so is Brad’s ex, Jennifer Aniston.

Bottom line? Until we see a multi-million dollar shot of this newborn, we’re not buying. But on the off-chance we’re wrong … CONGRATULATIONS ANGIE!
