‘Jurassic World’ Becomes the Fastest Film to Cross $1 Billion Globally!

“Jurassic World” is poised to cross $1 billion at the global box office more quickly than any film before it.

The dinosaur blockbuster should eclipse that mark on Monday after 13 days in theaters, trumping the record set earlier this year by “Furious 7,” which took 17 days to pass that barrier. Currently, the Universal release’s worldwide total sits at $981.3 million, after topping foreign charts this weekend with a $160.5 million haul from 66 territories.

The film has shattered expectations. Going into the summer, analysts expected that the picture would be overshadowed by “Minions” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Now, it has a chance of being the highest-grossing release of the year, potentially giving “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” a run for its money when it debuts this December.“It’s destroying box office records,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “It will be interesting to see how well it continues to perform. Can ‘Star Wars’ even compete with this film?”

The picture isn’t just a domestic smash. “Jurassic World” has done massive business in China, where it has earned $167.1 million, more than double the amount it has racked up anywhere else save for the United States.

Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out” also put up big numbers at the foreign box office, though its international rollout is more staggered than that of many summer blockbusters. The critically adored family film earned a robust $41 million from 41 territories, the biggest of which were Mexico ($8.8 million), Russia ($7.7 million) and France ($5.2 million). The Russian debut ranks as Disney’s biggest animated opening in the country, while Mexico represented the best ever kickoff for an animated film that isn’t a sequel. The film still has much of Europe left to open and won’t land in China until July 30.

Foreign audiences got an early look at “Minions,” the “Despicable Me” spinoff that is expected to be one of the summer’s biggest hits. The Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment release bowed in four international territories this week, a quartet that includes Singapore, Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia, where it generated a sizable $12.3 million in receipts.

Among milestones, Warner Bros. and New Line’s “San Andreas” crossed $400 million at the global box office, pushing the $110 million movie squarely in profitable terrain. The disaster film added $18.8 million to its $414.2 million bounty.

The rest of the top five was rounded out by “SPL II: A Time for Consequences,” the sequel to the hit 2005 Hong Kong martial arts film “SPL: Sha Po Lang,” which earned a sizable $29 million.

Box Office: ‘Furious 7′ Becomes Highest Grossing Sequel In ‘Fast & Furious’ Series In 10 Days!

LykanHypersport

It took Fast & Furious 6fifteen weeks to final its domestic cume at $238.67M during the summer of 2013, and it will take Furious 7 just 10 days to unseat that film as the highest grossing title in the Fast & Furious franchise.  Universal sees Furious 7 clocking a second weekend of $60.6M at 4,022 raising the pic’s 10-day cume to $252.5M by end of today. That’s a 59% decline which is slightly better than the -64% that  Fast and Furious 6 registered in its second sesh.  Last night, Saturday tickets sales saw a 35% spike over Friday’s studio-reported $18.8M bringing the cume to $236.07M.  Furious 7‘s second weekend of $60.6 is the third best sophomore sesh for a film playing prior to summer, ranking behind the No. 2 frames of American Sniper ($64.6M) and Alice in Wonderland ($62.7M). Among the all-time best second weekends at the B.O., Furious 7 ranks 12th.

While Furious 7 and a number of studio pics were hogging up the top portion of the box office charts, arthouse distribs took advantage of the opportunity to serve older, smarter audiences by widening up some of their prestige pics. Hence, the expansions of Weinstein Co.’s Woman in GoldBleecker’ Street’s Danny Collins and A24’s Noah Baumbach film While We’re Young respectively took spots 7, 9 and 10 with the latter generating $1.3M from 242 playdates for a PTA of $5,598 (Brian Brooks will weigh in more about their success in his indie post).

Furious-7

Large format and Imax accounted for 14% of Furious 7‘s second weekend, which has greatly rocketed it past its previous installment. When  Fast and Furious 6 was released in May 2013, it was only in a handful of Imax situations since Star Trek Into Darkness had the Vulcan grip on the majority of the large format brand’s theaters. Strong play for Furious 7 is coming out of the west and the south central region of the United States. Universal is already hearing from exhibs that repeat viewing is impacting ticket sales. Where’s the finish line for Furious 7 stateside? One non-Uni box office analyst who has run various projection models believes that Furious 7 could get as high as $375M at the domestic B.O.

In second, DreamWorks Animation’s Home from 20th Century Fox took in $19M, down just 30% in its third frame at 3,703 theaters for a running cume of $129.55M.  Total domestic cume for Home is currently pacing ahead of last year’s DWA champ How to Train Your Dragon 2 by 6%.

Furious 7 Movie: The Full List of Cars!

Furious-7

Two hundred and thirty cars were harmed in the making of Fast & Furious 7. They were raced off ramps, parachuted from planes and driven head-first into each other.

For the seventh instalment in the multi-million dollar joy-riding franchise, the emphasis was on real stunts. Only 10 per cent of the action sequences in the film were generated by computer, which goes some way to explaining why so many of 340 cars used in the film were trashed.

Dennis McCarthy, the man who modifies the cars for the film, gives each one the same basic structure: a 500-horsepower fuel injection unit and a three-speed manual transmission. This minimises the range of spare parts that have to be used, and allows the stunt team to minutely choreograph each scene without having to know the individual peculiarities of each vehicle.

Lykan Hypersport

This Middle Eastern supercar, made by the Beirut-based company W Motors, is the most expensive to feature in a Fast & Furious film. There are only seven models of the car in the world, with each one priced at around £2.3 million.

Even the headlights on this car are outrageous, illuminated with white gold, diamonds and sapphires.

1970 Dodge Charger

This modified 1970 Dodge Charger, which is the signature car of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), is one of five cars dropped from a Lockheed C-130 Hercules plane in one of Fast & Furious 7’s most spectacular stunts, shot above the Arizona desert.

One Charger was dropped from 12,000ft and another exact replica from 8,000ft. Attached to military-grade parachutes, most of the cars survived the drop. In total, nine versions of the Charger were made for the film.

The scene was shot in a multitude of different ways: three skydivers with hand-held and helmet cameras jumped with the cars; cameramen filmed from the interior of the plane and from a helicopter circling nearby; there was camera crew on the ground; and each car was fitted with two or three Go-Pros.
