Viber acquired by e-commerce giant Rakuten for $900 million!

This is kind of interesting. The Wall Street Journal is reporting this morning that the popular voice call app Viber has agreed to a deal to be acquired by Rakuten for $900 million. For those unfamiliar with the e-commerce giant, it’s essentially Japan’s version of Amazon.

Viber is available on all major mobile and desktop platforms, and is one of Skype’s biggest competitors with over 300 million users worldwide. It was one of the first apps to allow 3G VoIP on the iPhone and it now supports land-line calls, messages and even push-to-talk…

Here’s the report from The Journal:

“Japan’s Rakuten Inc. 4755.TO +1.22% said it will acquire call-application maker Viber Media Inc. for $900 million, in the online retailer’s first major foray into voice communications.

The deal for Cyprus-based Viber, which lets users make Internet-based calls on smartphones and computers, expands the Japanese e-commerce giant’s global portfolio of services, which now spans e-readers, financial services, and the baseball team that until recently hosted star pitcher Masahiro Tanaka.”

And their statements from the press release:

“I am tremendously excited to welcome Viber to the Rakuten family. Viber delivers the most consistently high quality and convenient messaging and VoIP experience available. Additionally, Viber has introduced a great sticker market and has tremendous potential as a gaming platform. Simply put, Viber understands how people actually want to engage and have built the only service that truly delivers on all fronts. This makes Viber the ideal total consumer engagement platform for Rakuten as we seek to bring our deep understanding of the consumer to vast new audiences through our dynamic ecosystem of Internet Services.”

Viber CEO and Founder, Talmon Marco, underlined these synergies:

“Rakuten is one of the world’s most important Internet companies. It is truly dominant in its home market of Japan and has been rapidly expanding globally. This combination presents an amazing opportunity for Viber to enhance our rapid user growth in both existing and new markets. Sharing similar aspirations with Rakuten, our vision is to be the world’s No.1 communications platform and our combination with Rakuten is an important step in that direction.”

While the $900 million offer seems a bit small in comparison to other tech acquisition deals, it’s worth noting that Viber doesn’t make much money. It’s only recently began generating revenue via sticker sales and Viber Out, which allows users to call non-Viber numbers for a fee.

Rakuten, for its part, generates about $65 billion in revenue per year, and has recently made major investments in Pinterest, and Canadian e-book firm Kobo. There’s no word yet on its plans for Viber, but it appears that it’s going to continue to operate it as a standalone service.

WhatsApp iOS 7 update is out with new design, broadcast lists and more!

whatsapp-ios-7-2

The highly anticipated iOS 7 update for WhatsApp finally landed in the App Store this afternoon. The update brings the iOS client for the popular messaging service to version 2.11.5, and includes an all new design, new features and various improvements.

One of the big new features in 2.11.5 is called broadcasts lists, and it allows you to send messages to many people simultaneously. So say for instance you have a list of your classmates or work colleagues, you can message them all at once instead of individually…

Here are the release notes for version 2.11.5:

The apps new design follows the same template as just about every other app that has been updated to match iOS 7′s aesthetics. There’s enough white space, flat graphics and blue accents to make all of the folks that don’t like Apple’s new design direction cringe.

But I happen to like the new design, and I’m really digging the UX improvements. There’s the new broadcast lists feature we already mentioned above, as well larger thumbnails, improved location sharing and blocking contacts is now much easier than before.

If you’re already a WhatsApp user, I feel like grabbing this update is a no-brainer. Just make sure, as the release notes caution, that you backup your conversations to iCloud before doing so. When you’re ready, you can findthe new WhatsApp in the App Store for free.

BlackBerry Messenger beta for iOS and Android invites rolling out

BBM-beta-invites

The long-rumored BlackBerry Messenger is finally launching on iOS and Android before the end of summer (so before September 22). It looks like the software is coming along nicely as Canada’s embattled smartphone maker has started rolling out invites to a small number of users on its Beta Zone website, asking them to test out the Android and iOS versions of the software…

As reported by BlackBerryOS.com, the program is not yet available for everyone.

Some users with a BlackBerry ID reported receiving an email invitation seen top of post. The first BBM beta is available under the Eligible Programs section.

The beta app requires an iOS 6 or Android Ice Cream Sandwich device. BBM for iOS and Android is slated for worldwide release later this summer, the email notice reads.

MobileSyrup previously said the free cross-platform app will initially include basic messaging and group chatting features. Advanced capabilities such as voice, screen sharing and the BBM Channels will be added via future updates.

I fear it may be too late for BBM now. The IM landscape is a pretty crowded space divided between Apple’s iMessage, Google’s new Hangouts app, Whats App and Viber.

Will you be giving BBM on your iPhone a try once it goes public?

WhatsApp Messenger is Now FREE on the App Store!

An enormously popular paid iPhone app has just gone free. WhatsApp Messenger, a cross-platform messaging app, is now listed as free in the App Store.

Earlier this year, company officials announced that a paid annual subscription fee will be unveiled by the end of 2013. With the change, the app will be free for the first year and then cost $1 for every year after.

Back in May, when the 50 billionth app was downloaded, Apple announced that the app is the sixth most popular paid iPhone app of all time at its former $0.99 cost.

WhatsApp Messenger is designed for the iPhone/iPod touch and can be downloaded now in the App Store for free.

The huge price change came right on the heels of the app’s first update in 2013.

First up, version 2.10.1 now features a multiple send UI so users can send more than one photo at the same time.

The app has also gained iCloud compatibility for chat history backup and restore. Users can turn on the function on by going to Settings, Chat Settings, and then Chat Backup.

Finally, the update has added URL schema support for third-party apps.
