James Bond ‘Spectre’ Number one with $73 million Opening Weekend!

SPECTRE

The new James Bond film “Spectre” was No. 1 at the box office and opened to an estimated $73 million in the U.S. and Canada. That’s the second biggest debut in the James Bond series, but well behind 2012’s “Skyfall,” which also starred Daniel Craig and was directed by Sam Mendes and took in $88.4 million its first weekend.

Early international returns have broken records in Europe, particularly the United Kingdom, indicating that Americans are a little cooler on Bond’s latest big screen foray. The movie may have been impacted by many negative reviews, a change from “Skyfall.”

Distributor Sony Pictures Entertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. spent about $250 million to make “Spectre,” vs. $209 million on “Skyfall.”

The weekend’s other new film playing nationwide was “The Peanuts Movie,” an animated return to the screen for Charlie Brown and his friends. With largely positive reviews, it opened at No. 2 with $45 million, a good but not great number for a franchise that’s new to most kids.

The teen vampire flick brought in a massive $64 million from November 21st to 25th adding to the $163 million already grossed by the popular movie in the States. It certainly helped the box office break their Thanksgiving takings record with an estimated $290 million beating their previous record from 2009 of $273 million over the course of the American holiday.

Coming in second place at the box office was the most successful James Bond movie so far, ‘Skyfall’, which brought in $51 million over the weekend totaling $221.7 million altogether for the US. The immense success of the film has made 007 star Daniel Craig the highest earning British actor after signing a £31 million contract to appear in two further Bond films.

Third in the box office was Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’ biopic starring Daniel Day Lewis which took in $34.1 million during Thanksgiving and almost doubled its US takings altogether. Against predictions, DreamWorks’ ‘Rise of the Guardians’ came fourth with $32.6 million and Ang Lee’s ‘Life of Pi’ was number five with $30.1 million.

Adele Releases James Bond Theme Song.

James Bond is rather ostentatious.

Adele simply sings.

On the surface, these famous Brits aren’t especially alike, with one significant exception: both excelt at the job. They are the best of the best.

Which makes it appropriate for Adele to join the likes of Paul McCartney, Nancy Sinatra and Carly Simon by providing the latest theme song for this franchise. Listen to her “Skyfall” track now:

In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M (Dame Judi Dench, in what may be her final role in a James Bond film) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her.

“As MI6 comes under attack,” says an official release for the film, “Bond must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.”

The production and release of Skyfall had been placed on hold when its studio, MGM, encountered financing problems, but is now a go for November.
