Taylor Swift has cleaned up at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards.

The singer picked up eight awards including top artist, top female artist and top album for 1989.

There was also a section of the ceremony dedicated to the premiere of her video for her latest single Bad Blood.

But they did let some other people win and, obviously, Kanye was on hand to add his token controversial moment to proceedings.

One Direction

He may have become accustomed to dominating awards shows, but Sam Smith was relegated to a mere three Billboard awards: top male, top new artist and top radio songs artist.

Having just had an operation on his vocal cords, the singer was forced to make an acceptance speech using cue cards via video message.

Jennifer Lopez

He thanked his fans and asked Taylor Swift to bet $100 on black at a casino.

One Direction were also among the winners, taking home top touring artist and top duo/group.

Zendaya, Hailee Steinfeld, Taylor Swift, Lily Aldridge and Martha Hunt

The four-piece dedicated their first award to “our brother Zayn” but Liam was cut off before he could finish their second speech – leading to #OhNoLiam to start trending.

John Legend

The group was also on hand to give John Legend his top radio song award for All Of Me.

For the record, Taylor’s other awards were: Billboard chart achievement, Billboard top 200 artist, Billboard top 100 artist, top digital songs artist and top streaming song (video) for Blank Space.

Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift

Kanye got booed

The boos had already started before Mr West had started his set – with jeers aimed at his sister-in-laws Kylie and Kendall Jenner.

But several accounts from inside the arena suggest they continued as the rapper closed the ceremony with All Day and Black Skinhead, which were both heavily censored for viewers watching on TV.

Taylor Swift wins eight Billboard awards! Justin Bieber, Gotye and Rihanna among the other big winners

Taylor Swift was the big winner at the Billboard music awards, scooping eight out of her 11 nominations, including top artist and top Billboard 200 album for Red.

She told the crowd: “You are the longest and best relationship I ever had.”

Swift gave a colourful performance of her hit 22, starting backstage and working her way to the main stage on the back of a bike with help from a dozen background dancers and a flurry of red balloons.

Justin Bieber, who performed twice, won three awards, including top male artist, social artist and the fan-voted milestone award, beating Swift and Bruno Mars.

When accepting the latter to some booing, he alluded to the tumultuous weeks he’s had in the public eye. “I’m 19 years old; I think I’m doing a pretty good job. And basically from my heart I really just want to say it should really be about the music, it should be about the craft that I’m making. This is not a gimmick,” he said.

“I’m an artist and I should be taken seriously and all this other bull should not be spoken.”

Bieber performed with will.i.am and solo when he sang Take You in leather trousers, a leather vest and a black shirt that had one sleeve, as blue laser lights beamed.

Miguel, too, had a show-stopping performance, though he appeared to kick a fan when he jumped over the crowd while singing his hit Adorn. The R&B singer seemed to have landed part of his body on one woman, who walked away, and kicked another, who held her head low.

Maroon 5 and fun. were nominated for 11 awards and walked away with one win each in pre-telecast announcements. Gotye and Rihanna had the second-most wins with four awards each.

Nicki Minaj won the first award in the live telecast for top rap artist, beating out Drake, Flo Rida, Pitbull and Psy. “I definitely did not expect this one,” she said.

Minaj performed High School with Lil Wayne. Prince, who received the icon award, closed the show with a medley of his hits.

Madonna won top touring artist, dance artist and dance album for MDNA. “Thank you for supporting me for three decades. Without you I truly wouldn’t be here,” she said.

Katy Perry Is Billboard’s Woman of the Year!

Katy Perry

Katy Perry will take home the Woman of the Year Award at the 2012 Billboard Women in Music event on Friday, Nov. 30, in New York City, capping off a year that’s seen the pop star break chart records, release a 3D feature film and bring her candy-colored tour all over the world.

After launching into the mainstream with the saucy single “I Kissed a Girl” and hit album “One of the Boys,” Perry set fire to the charts with 2010’s “Teenage Dream.” The record-setting album notched five Hot 100 No. 1s, a first for an album by a female artist, and has sold 2.5 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. “Dream” spent over 100 weeks in the Billboard 200.

Perry’s impressive numbers also  include a record nine No. 1s on the Pop Songs chart, a record seven on the Adult Pop Songs chart, 10 on Dance/Club Play Songs and an overall seven atop the Hot 100. She’s sold 48 million songs in the U.S. alone, according to SoundScan, with tracks such as “Firework” and “California Gurls” among the top 30 downloads ever.

Her chart dominance extended to her ambitious “California Dreams” tour, which sold out 124 arenas while helping fund charity efforts for the Children’s Health Fund, Generosity Water, the Humane Society and the Red Cross. The tour was documented earlier this year in “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” the 3-D concert film that Perry both starred in and produced. She debuted the film in Los Angeles with a special performance for Billboard and Pepsi’s Summer Beats series this summer, shutting down the Hollywood and Highland intersection for hundreds of fans.

Perry debuted her latest hit single, “Wide Awake,” during a high flying performance on the Billboard Music Awards on May 20 in Las Vegas. The song went on to reach No. 2 on the Hot 100.

“Katy Perry broke into the industry not even five years ago, and has already accomplished more than most artists can hope for in an entire career,” Bill Werde, Billboard’s editorial director, says. “We are thrilled to celebrate these incredible achievements and her amazing past 12 months by honoring her with the Billboard Woman of the Year Award. With what seems like a never-ending supply of record-breaking, chart-topping hits, coupled with her unique and fresh style, Katy Perry is hands-down one of the most exciting and inspiring artists in the industry today.”

Billboard’s annual Women in Music Event, now in its seventh year, celebrates the most powerful and talented women in the music business, coinciding with the publication of Billboard’s Women in Music Power Players list. This year’s event will be taking place on Friday, Nov. 30 at Capitale in New York City. Previous honorees include Taylor Swift, Fergieand Beyoncé.
